I have great news for everyone!

Now it is very easy to type Romanized Sanskṛt - anyone can do it.   Most computers today already have Unicode fonts pre-loaded in them.  And with a tiny software called diacwin, which is merely a keyboard filter that is triggered only when you need it (triggered by simply typing semicolon ; )

Read about it, get the software and step-by-step instructions for beginners on how to install it, and how to type on this site:   www.typesanskrit.on.to

Do share it with everyone, and try to make all your postings henceforth (even in gmail and facebook) with the correctly spelt words (i.e. with proper diacritics), like this:

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa

Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma

Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

हरे क्रुष्ण हरे क्रुष्ण
क्रुष्ण क्रुष्ण हरे हरे
हरे राम हरे राम
राम राम हरे हरे

  • another site to explore for the technically-inclined:

    http://mylanguages.org/devanagari_romanization.php

  • i also just found out about another conversion utility called "diCrunch" :   http://www.codewallah.com/diCrunch/diCrunch.php?act=help

i have not analyzed it or tested it yet, but I am sure that nothing could be more simple, perfect and ingenious that the Diacwin invented by HG Murari Das (Michael Best).

i am just noting it here for future reference and to share it with anyone else who may be interested in the subject.

by the way......... many of these fonts matters and softwares are complex and only appeal to the tech-savvy computer-geek types!   but i must say that this is not so of the Diacwin, which i am sure anyone can easily master in a few days!   Join the Sanskṛt typing revolution now:  read www.typesanskrit.on.to and start typing!

So for ordinary users, don't waste your time looking at the above "diCrunch" or other software, but do start using Diacwin as soon as you can.   Just set aside 30 mins to read www.typesanskrit.on.to and you'll be typing sanskṛt like a pro!

And if you always find yourself getting confused about the diacritics and cannot remember where to put them, don't worry.. you are not alone!  It is quite natural for our mind to subconsciously delete all the diacritic marks (simply because we don't understand them!), so that we can read the english alphabets easily.  These videos will help us understand and memorize all the diacritics,

    https://gitajayanti.ning.com/video/what-are-diacritics-pt-1-of-3-int...

and this video will guide us in understanding how to pronounce the various alphabets once we have understood what diacritics are:

    Hare Kṛṣṇa!

    your humble servant,

in service of śrī guru and śrī gaurāṅga,

    dīna

  • i just found an online converter here:  http://www.yash.info/indianLanguageConverter/hindi.html    It works very well, BUTTTTT it does not use the standard spelling for Romanized Sanskrit - for eg.   bhaktivedAnta has to be spelt bhakthivedAnta (with a 'th') to get the correct result...   Still it is useful in emergencies for getting a few words or lines converted into devanagari.

but the EASIEST way to convert any transliterated text is to use the DevaWin program, also created by Murari Das - read how to use it and where to download it towards the end of the article (see "PS3") on this page: www.typesanskrit.on.to
